The Longhorn Amplified Social and Economic History of East Africa from 1800 to present sheds light both on the historical unity of the pre-colonial societies and post-colonial East African countries as well as how they consolidated the concept of interdependence among themselves. For a long time, all kinds of myths and prejudices have concealed the true history of East Africa from the world at large.
By taking stock of our knowledge of East Africa, the author is putting forward new view points on the East African socio-economic transformations, socio-cultural changes and macro-economic developments. This history shows the contemporary analysis of how the East African economies have integrated into the global village through multi-dimensional policies.
The scope of the literature herein covers three sections, namely: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial or independence timelines. The pre-colonial history entails the significance of the social institutions, state formation, exploitation and utilisation of natural resources, analysis of local trade and industry, and the resultant impact of the external contacts to East Africa before the advent of the colonial masters. The colonial history is a comprehensive analysis of the concept of scramble for and partition of East Africa, the response of the East Africans to colonialism, social and Economic developments (colonial economy), development of trade unionism and the emergence of urbanisation. The post-independence history addresses the evolution of africanisation (Ujaama, Harambee and Common Man’s Charter) in an attempt to solve the post-independence challenges. This book also describes the salient contribution of the Asians, as well as the development of cooperative societies, marketing boards, East African community and globalisation. It explores neo-colonial tendencies that have awakened the East African consciousness towards self-reliance and independence.
